Heading home after a Vietnam–Thailand route, and there's a stack of dong left in your wallet that no exchange counter back home will touch — a familiar situation for anyone traveling around Southeast Asia. The Vietnamese dong trades thinly on international currency markets outside the region, and most exchange providers worldwide simply won't accept it. Here's what to do with leftover dong while you're still in Thailand.
Why dong is hard to exchange outside Vietnam
Banks and exchange counters in Europe, the US, or even parts of Asia don't decline dong out of spite — they simply have no rate for the currency and not enough demand to justify holding it. That's why it makes more sense to exchange dong while you're still in the region, rather than carrying it home and hoping to find somewhere that takes it: the odds outside Southeast Asia aren't good.
What happens at an EXFM office
EXFM (Fast Money Exchange) is licensed by the Bank of Thailand under No. MC225670007 and accepts Vietnamese dong for exchange to baht — only in person, at one of the offices in the Surin, Karon, or Rawai areas of Phuket, open daily 10:00–22:00.
Dong is a less commonly traded currency than dollars or euros, so the rate is confirmed individually. It's worth messaging a manager before your visit to confirm current terms for your amount — that matters more for VND than for more widely traded currencies.

What to do with dong before you leave the region
If your route is Vietnam, then Thailand or another Southeast Asian country, exchange your remaining dong while you're still in the region, while the currency is still liquid for local providers. Waiting until you're home is a risky bet — outside the region, dong turns into paper nobody has a reason to buy.
When it's worth confirming terms in advance
- You're holding dong right now — message a manager before your visit to check the current rate for your amount.
- A small leftover amount after a trip — even a small sum is better exchanged here than carried home.
- Mixing VND with another currency — a manager will confirm the rate for each and total it for you on the spot.
