Flying from Dubai to Phuket and don't want to track yet another floating rate? Here's some good news. The UAE dirham is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate the UAE Central Bank has held for decades, which makes AED behave more predictably than most other currencies. Here's what that means in practice when exchanging AED for baht.
Why the AED rate is more predictable
The AED-to-USD rate barely moves day to day — unlike, say, the Australian dollar, which can swing noticeably. That doesn't remove baht-to-dollar market movement from the picture, but it does remove one variable: you don't need to track AED/USD separately, since it's stable by design.
What happens at an EXFM office
EXFM (Fast Money Exchange) is licensed by the Bank of Thailand under No. MC225670007. AED exchange happens only in person, at one of the offices in the Surin, Karon, or Rawai areas of Phuket, open daily 10:00–22:00.
You bring your passport and cash AED, and a manager confirms the exact baht amount — because AED is pegged to the dollar, don't expect sharp independent swings driven by the dirham itself; the figure mostly moves with the dollar-to-baht rate.

Who typically needs to exchange AED for baht
Travelers and business owners splitting time between the UAE and Southeast Asia are the most common group bringing AED to Thailand — direct flights connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi to Thailand, and the route is popular with both tourists and people doing business across both regions.
For larger business payments between the UAE and Thailand — a property purchase, for instance — cash exchange isn't the right tool by definition: that needs an official bank transfer with supporting documents. EXFM has a separate international transfer service for that, distinct from cash exchange.
When cash AED exchange isn't what you need
- A property purchase or a large business deal — that calls for an official SWIFT transfer, not cash; ask a manager about this service separately.
- A small amount for a trip — for that, an office visit is the fastest option.
- Mixing AED with another currency on the same trip — a manager will confirm the rate for each and total it for you on the spot.
